What Is A Direct Vent Fireplace Or Stove & How Does It Work?

Direct vent appliances are gas appliances that don’t need a working chimney. Instead, these factory-built appliances vent directly through a pipe system. One pipe is used to draw combustion air into the firebox and another pipe is used to vent combustion byproducts out of the home. The stove pipe may exit through a wall in the home or it may be installed inside of the masonry chimney, if that’s a preferred option.

Unlike traditional chimneys, direct vent systems are “sealed combustion systems,” which draw combustion air from the outside, and only pull in room air in order to warm it around the firebox and redistribute it throughout the room.

This means that, with a direct vent fireplace or stove, you won’t have to worry about your appliance sucking warm air out of your home or competing for combustion air. This sealed combustion approach virtually eliminates draft problems, carbon monoxide, and other indoor air quality concerns.

What else makes direct vent fireplaces and stoves great?

  • Direct vent systems can be installed in places that would not allow for a chimney — they can even maneuver around stairways. In fact, these systems are versatile enough to allow for top or rear exit and can be vertically vented or horizontally vented, making installation location options virtually limitless.
  • Direct vent fireplaces and stoves can be used during a power outage. No electricity? That doesn’t mean you have to go without the warmth and comfort of a fire.

The reality is, direct vent fireplaces and stoves can be the very best, but only if the venting system is installed properly. Make sure installation is done right by trusting the job to the certified, experienced, and enthusiastic team at Top Hat. You’ll be glad you did!

And if problems ever arise with your system or things don’t seem to be working the way they should, you can count on us then, too. We’re troubleshooting experts and we’ll figure out what’s going on and make the necessary repairs fast and professionally.
