HeatShield® — The Industry’s Trusted Answer To Clay Tile Chimney Liner Damage
Learning that your flue liner is damaged and needs to be repaired before you light another fire in your fireplace can be hard news to swallow. You may not want to reline with a new stainless steel liner just because of a crack here and there or eroded mortar joints between a couple of flue tiles, but you also don’t want to worry about heat transfer, carbon monoxide leaks, and other dangers that could arise if you don’t have the liner fixed.
But do you really have to invest in a whole new liner or stop using your fireplace altogether? Thanks to the revolutionary HeatShield® system, you now have other options.
HeatShield® is a flue repair and restoration system that relies on the strength and durability of a Cerfractory Flue Sealant. How does it work? Well, first the flue is cleaned and prepped with a tie coat. The next steps depend on the condition of the line.

HeatShield® Seals Gaps Between Clay Tiles & Repairs Joints
In a terra cotta chimney liner, tiles are stacked on top of each other from the smoke chamber to the top of the flue. In between each tile is a layer of mortar, but unfortunately, moisture and creosote can wear down and erode the mortar in the joints between the clay tiles. When this happens, heat, smoke, and carbon monoxide can seep through these gaps and openings, which isn’t safe or great for performance. That’s where the HeatShield® joint repair system comes in.
We create a custom foam applicator tool and apply the Cerfractory Flue Sealant where it’s needed to seal, fill, and cover the gaps and spaces. Flue joint restoration is as a simple as that.
HeatShield® Resurfaces Damaged Flue Liners
When you have a sturdy, strong flue liner that has surface damage, HeatShield®’s resurfacing or “slip casting” system can help. We pour the Cerfractory Flue Sealant down into the flue and pull the custom-fitted applicator up through the flue. As the applicator travels up the flue, it evenly distributes the Cerfractory Flue Sealant, filling gaps, cracks, and voids, and leaving behind a smooth, insulated, smoke-tight surface.
HeatShield® Has A Relining Option, Too!
Some terra cotta flue liners need overall support, strength, and insulation. In these situations, there is a HeatShield® relining option for the job. How does it work? We start exactly as we would with the other two HeatShield® flue restoration options, and do everything we do in the resurfacing system above. The difference is, once we have that first layer of Cerfractory Flue Sealant applied, we secure a stainless steel mesh liner (the CeCure® sleeve) in the flue. Then, we pour another layer of the Cerfractory Flue Sealant down into the flue (this time on the interior of the liner), leaving a structurally reinforced, smooth, air-tight surface.
A Difference You Can See
